The Brief
At a time when the future of the mining industry is so uncertain, Exxaro made a bold decision to future-proof and upskill their employees.
The challenge was to launch an innovative learning and development platform where all of their 15,000 employees could learn, unlearn and relearn critical skills for the
digital future.
Exxaro uncovered that the current mechanism of training
was complex, ineffective and disempowering to employees.
This left a clear divide between computer-literate and
non-literate employees perpetuating the digital disparity that was so key to address. The challenge was to enable all employees to engage through a digitally-driven learning
and development experience.
Our Solution
To enable all employees to engage through a digitally-driven learning and development experience, WinWin International developed an engaging learning solution on the IWIN platform, with the employee at the heart of our approach. The platform adopted intuitive navigation to enhance learning engagement and ensure that employees with low-computer literacy could still be equipped through a digital solution.
IWIN was initially piloted with 450 employees and 5 induction modules. These contained media-rich content including videos, animations, 3D, 360° environments and audio, ensuring ease of understanding and increased retention. The test run was a great success and delivered powerful results: All employees, regardless of computer literacy, successfully completed the learning modules through the IWIN platform, closing the digital learning divide and getting the Exxaro workforce future-ready.
Following the pilot’s huge success, the project entered phase two, the development of an additional
14 function-specific/relevant modules and packaging them on the IWIN platform with immersive media tools, aligning with Exxaro’s broader Learning and Development strategy.
The IWIN solution has now rolled out a standardised learning experience to over 7 000 employees across three locations and continues to be used to equip employees with crucial industry-specific knowledge and skills that are practical and relevant to their day-to-day tasks.
In 2019, the IWIN solution won a Silver Loerie Award for innovation and outstanding execution in the Service Design category - the highest award given in the category that year. Winning a Loerie is the highest accolade for creativity and innovation across the region of Africa and the
Middle East.
